McMaster University's Pediatric Residency Program Curriculum
The program meets the requirements of both basic core training for the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario and Pediatric Training for Certification by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and the American Board of Pediatrics. The Pediatric Residency Program is a fully accredited program focusing on providing excellent training in all aspects of pediatrics so that trainees may pursue either community consulting pediatrics or a pediatric sub-specialty. The program will provide a broad-based clinical & academic training in pediatrics with the goal of creating the foundation required for practice of general and subspecialty pediatrics. The program objectives are developed around the seven CanMeds roles. The program is divided between in-patient and ambulatory rotations. Annual elective rotations are available after the first year of training.
The program provides time for resident learning using a format of seminar, lectures, interactive discussion and journal clubs. The curriculum for this is planned by the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee. Protected times include weekly Grand Rounds and the Academic Half Day. The work environment is friendly and supportive and the program has a well-established mentor system. The Postgraduate Medical Education Committee carefully evaluates and incorporates feedback from the residents through the twice a year Resident Retreat and resident representation on the Committee.

There are two paths. For those residents who pursue general pediatric training, this is a flexible year planned to meet the individual resident’s academic goals and develop leadership skills.
Residents may choose to go to a Fellowship in their fourth year. They would be well prepared for this as all core rotations are completed at the end of their third year.
